10/04/2011 - Peru, Cusco to Paucartambo
The start of our jungle adventure, was quite that. An early start meant we were on the road at 5:30am, the reason being, we'd get to San Pedro in the conservation area around 4pm to see the Cock-of-the-Rock, the Peruvian national bird. Things were going well until we reached Paucartambo 3 and a bit hours in. It was here that we found out that there were 7 landslides blocking our way. Our choice was to return to Cusco and try again tomorrow or to stay in Paucartambo and leave from there in the morning. An easy decision, there was no way we were going to add 7 unnecessary hours to our journey by going back to Cusco. So we had an unscheduled stop in Paucartambo. Paucartambo is a small town of roughly 4,000 people. Today it was much more than that as people had come in from the surrounding villages to vote for the elections. It was a nice day in town, but one where we would have preferred to be in the conservation area in the jungle.
The photos are of the glacial river running through the town, the only oven in town where the locals bring food to be baked, the locals hanging around outside the main market building and of some locals contemplating passing the first landslide that was blocking our path (it doesn't look too bad, but boulders were falling down whilst we were waiting there thinking what to do) on motorbike.
