11/04/2011 - Peru, Paucartambo to San Pedro

An early start to hopefully get back on track travel wise.  Too hopeful it seemed.  The same landslide blocking our way yesterday was still blocking our way today.  We had to wait for 2 hours for 'the machine' to come and clear the way.  After that, we got bogged in a stream crossing and then got held up for a couple more hours at a major landslide.  Once through that we got to the conservation area only to find another landslide.  Only, at this landslide there was no machine to clear the way, so together with the locals we cleared the way and re-built the road.  The re-built road would not have been open to traffic in the west, but this is not the west and we got the van through.  Even with the delays today, we were lucky enough to get to San Pedro in time to see the Cock-of-the-Rock.  In all it was a very adventurous day indeed.

The photos are of some locals crossing the landslide, 'la máquina' clearing the first landslide, a truck pulling our bogged van to safer ground, the larger landslide, a waterfall in the conservation area and the male cock-of-the-rock.
