05/05/2011 - Ecuador, Quito to Santa Cruz Island (Galapagos)
A delayed plane of 1:30 minutes added to the misery that has been heaped upon us in Ecuador. Added to this was a last minute change to our itinerary that meant two days out our six were far less than they were meant to be did not bode well (we later found out it was changed back because of an email I sent). However, upon arrival in the Galapagos things picked up straight away. On the short ferry ride to our boat, we saw sea lions. On our boat, we were stunned by the opulence. Then on our fist activity we were amazed at seeing marine iguanas up close and personal, so close that if you didn't watch where you stepped you would step on them. These animals do not fear people. Very very special. We also saw sally lightfoot crabs, lava lizards and giant tortoises (including some males 'practicing mating') at the Charles Darwin Station. It's amazing, but this brief introduction to such a stunningly unique locale made us forget about the trials and tribulations of the last couple of weeks.
The photos are of a marine iguana, two marine iguanas, a female lava lizard, two male tortoises 'practicing' and a land iguana.
