30/04/2011 - Ecuador, Guayaquil to Quito

After a good sleep and big breakfast we headed out to find somewhere else to stay.  No joy.  As it turns out there is a medical conference in town with 2,500 delegates, unfortunately, Guayaquil only has 1,500 hotel rooms so the spillover had booked out all the hostels.  We then tried to see if we could push the itinerary a bit and go straight to Riobamba, no accommodation there either.  Not good.  In the end we found cheap flights to Quito, so we booked a hostel there and went.  The Hilton were great, they tried to find us somewhere else to stay (they could only get a suite at a 5 star place for $400 per night, so said no on our behalf), gave us a free transfer to the airport and really tried to help us out.  It was something very nice given our last day.  It was a shame to leave Guayaquil without seeing it as it looked quite nice, but them's the breaks.

We got to Quito and found our rather spacious and nice hostel.  The only shame it is in an area where you can't walk around at night.  Add to that, the fact that the locals kept giving us evils and calling us gringos we ended up retreating to the hostel with some comfort food and movies to put the last two hellish days behind us.

The photo is of about the only thing we saw in Guayaquil, transport, in this case the airport (photo courtesy of Liz).
